Protein needs at a glance

  • 0.8 g per kg (about 0.36 g per lb): the U.S. RDA for healthy adults who are not very active.
  • 1.2 to 2.0 g per kg: suggested for people who exercise regularly (American College of Sports Medicine and International Society of Sports Nutrition).
  • 1.6 to 2.2 g per kg: a common range for building muscle with strength training.
  • 1.0 to 1.2 g per kg or more: often suggested for adults 65 and older to help keep muscle.

Spreading protein over 3 or 4 meals, often 20 to 40 grams each, is an easy way to reach your total. The calculator shows how much chicken, eggs, Greek yogurt, lentils or tofu gives you one meal’s worth, using USDA FoodData Central values.
